Apple, Ham and Cheese Stuffed French Toast

French toast lovers take note! After tasting this sweet and savory sandwich, you may never go back to plain French toast again.

  • 16 slices sandwich bread
  • 12 oz. Deli ham, shaved
  • 2 medium apples, cored and quartered
  • 8 slices (about 1 oz. each) cheddar, Swiss or havarti cheese
  • 8 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil, divided
  • Maple syrup, cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar


  1. For each sandwich, place 1 bread slice on work surface. Arrange 1½ ounces ham on bread. Thinly slice 1 quartered apple over ham. Top with 1 slice cheese and another slice of bread. Repeat with remaining bread, ham, apples and cheese.

  2. In large shallow bowl, whisk eggs and milk until blended. Pour half the egg mixture into 13”x9” dish.

  3. Heat nonstick skillet or griddle to 350°F or over medium heat. Brush 1 tablespoon oil over griddle.

  4. Place 4 sandwiches into egg mixture, turning to coat both sides. Cook on griddle 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown. Repeat with remaining oil, egg mixture and sandwiches.

  5. Serve with syrup, cinnamon-sugar or powdered sugar.

  6. Refrigerate leftovers.
